FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- Assisted living and retirement communities are taking extra steps to limit coronavirus exposure to the high-risk elderly community.

Misty Miller COO of Fort Worth-based Civitas, a company that operates assisted living facilities throughout the state, says all facilities are screening staff members and residents every day and you cannot enter the building if your temperature is 99 degrees or higher. “I do understand that 99 degrees is not the clinical definition for a fever, which is 100.4, but the reason we have this stringent protocol is because we are seeing with COVID-19 some of those lower grade temps and we want to intervene,” said Miller.

Also, no visitors are allowed in unless you’re a medical professional and residents are encouraged not to leave the building unless its for necessary medical appointments.

“One of the big things we’ve done in our readiness plan is to cross train staff and prepare them to work in other areas if we run into a worker shortage,” said Miller.

She said they are also stocking up on extra food, cleaning supplies and personal protection kits.
