FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- U.S. Rep. Kay Granger of Fort Worth declared victory over Chris Putnam in the Republican Primary For Texas’ Congressional District 12. Putnam is Granger’s first primary challenger in almost a decade. Granger garnered a little over 57% of the vote, Putnam had almost 43 percent.
Granger’s primary win secures her 13 term in congress. “I feel very good, I’m very appreciative. I’ve not only been in politics for a long time but I’ve served this community for a long time,” said Granger.
Granger’s challenger, former Colleyville Council Member Chris Putnam had criticized her for not being conservative enough to lead District 12. Granger addressed these concerns at her watch party Tuesday evening. “It was very concerning for my opponent to say things like I don’t support the President, who endorsed me, and he doesn’t just throw out endorsements…he knows what I’ve done,” Granger said. “He also made comments that I don’t support the wall but I wrote the bill,” she said.
Granger, a Fort Worth native and former Fort Worth Mayor, is the most senior Republican woman serving in the House and is also the top ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee.
Lisa Welch led on the Democrat side with an over 80% lead over Danny Anderson. District 12 includes western Tarrant County, all of Parker County and Eastern parts of Wise County.
