Man Found Guilty of Capital Murder in Death of Richardson Police Officer

COLLIN COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF) – The man on trial for the 2018 killing of a Richardson Police Officer was found guilty Wednesday, just two days after the trial began.

It took a Collin County jury less than three hours to convict Brandon McCall on two counts of Capital Murder in the 2018 shooting deaths of his friend Rene Gamez and Richardson Officer David Sherrard.

McCall’s attorney’s admitted in court that their client was responsible for the deaths but said there wasn’t an intent to kill. The prosecution argued that the evidence told the story, which included a confession from McCall the night of the shooting.

“It has been an emotional two-year journey for our Department, the Sherrard family and our first-responder partners,” Richardson Police said in a statement posted to social media on Wednesday. “Knowing that justice has been served will allow further healing by all of those so deeply impacted by this tragedy. We appreciate everyone who has shown support for our Department and the Sherrard family, you have helped us shine a light on David, making sure he will never be forgotten. We ask that you remember Rene Gamez, who was also senselessly killed that night and hope his family can find solace.”

The department thanked the Plano Police Department for leading the investigation.

The punishment phase of the trial will begin next week with the death penalty on the table.
