Hundreds of Coronavirus Evacuees to Arrive in San Antonio Friday

SAN ANTONIO  (WBAP/KLIF News) – 250 Americans who were evacuated from Wuhan, China due to the deadly coronavirus outbreak will arrive at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio today to be quarantined.

Centers for Disease Control Captain Jennifer McQuiston said these people are part of a group of almost a thousand the government decided to quarantine at U.S. military bases over the next two weeks.

“Our goal in bringing these evacuees back and making sure that they are safely quarantined for 14 days is to make sure that there’s no spread of the virus from this group and that they’re managed safely while they’re here,” she said.

Mcquiston said the quarantine period is based on what scientists have gleaned from other cases.

“This quarantine is based on what we know to be the approximate incubation period of this virus and that means from the time the person was exposed to the virus until they develop symptoms,” he said.

About 70 of the San Antonio group will be flown to Omaha and will be quarantined at a Nebraska National Guard base. Military bases in California will also house evacuees.

There are 12 confirmed cases in the United States. So far, more than 600 people have died and more than 28,000 have been infected worldwide.
