WATCH LIVE: Trial Begins for Former Dallas Police Officer Charged in Fatal Shooting Death of Genevive Dawes

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Opening arguments in the criminal trial of a former Dallas police officer began Tuesday morning.

42-year-old Christopher Hess is charged with aggravated assault by a public servant stemming from a fatal 2017 shooting while responding to a call for a stolen car.

Investigators said Hess, who was on scene with Senior Cpl. Jason Kimpel, allegedly fired 12 times into a car that was sitting in at an apartment complex in Old East Dallas, killing 21-year-old Genevive Dawes and wounding passenger Virgiliio Rosales.

Dawes and Rosales had been asleep in the car when officers arrived. Police said Dawes backed into a police cruiser and then pulled forward.

Body camera footage shows Dawes slowly reversing from a parking spot. It shows Hess yelling commands at the vehicle before firing his weapon.

Hess said the driver allegedly did not obey his orders to stop.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
