Southwest’s 2020 Projections Uncertain

(WBAP/KLIF) — After losing $540 million since the grounding of the 737 max, Southwest Airlines is tentative regarding 2020 projections.

The Dallas-based airline is still awaiting FAA re-certification of the 737-Max. Until then CEO Gary Kelly says the airline may start looking at alternatives.

By flying one type of plane, the company saves millions of dollars in cost savings and efficiency. Southwest Airlines Pilots Association president Jon Weaks says Southwest has almost exclusively flown the 737 since 1971, which leaves the company vulnerable. Currently, the airline has no plans to diversify it’s fleet.

According to the Dallas Morning News, if the North Texas airline moves to another plane, production by manufacturers Boeing and Airbus could take three years.

Southwest airlines continues to wait for Federal Aviation Administration re-certification of the Beoing 737 Max, but the government agency has no clear timetable for the plane’s return.
