Volunteer Security Guard Hailed a Hero in White Settlement Church Shooting

WHITE SETTLEMENT  (WBAP/KLIF News) – A volunteer armed security guard and member of the West Freeway Church of Christ  in White Settlement is being praised after he revealed he shot and killed the gunman who opened fire during services Sunday morning.

Jack Wilson issued a post on Facebook saying in part, “The events at West Freeway Church of Christ put me in a position that I hope no one would have to be in, and I had to take out an active shooter in church.”

Two worshipers were fatally shot when the gunman opened fire around 11 a.m. before Wilson and another volunteer guard returned fire, killing the suspect.

The horrific attack was captured on the church’s livestreamed service and it showed the gunman being shot moments after he fired at the two victims.

Local law enforcement, Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick praised the guards who quickly sprang into action to save lives.

Patrick credited a law passed in 2017 in the wake of the deadly Sutherland Springs church shooting for allowing congregations to arm themselves to be able to take out a shooter.

“That law removed all the fees that private institutions charged when they forego a security force. This church had its own security team,” said Patrick.

The two victims and suspect have not been officially identified.
