Operation Care to Host 12,000 North Texas Homeless in Annual Giving Event

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – More than 12,000 people will pack the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center in Dallas this weekend as part of Operation Care’s annual event giving North Texans in need a chance at a brief respite from the harsh realities of homelessness.

The organization’s founder Suzie Jennings said they’ll be giving away blankets and winter coats, noting that all too often homeless people are found dead each winter due to exposure.

It’s an act of kindness she said a simple donation can prevent.

“You can imagine for people living under the bridges, that is a life-saving tool for them,” said Jennings.

In addition to the food, hair cuts and makeovers, some attendees will be reunited with their families as part of the organization’s “Operation Phone Home.”

“If the homeless gets reunited with their families, we pay $200 for a bus ticket to go home and we make sure we reconnect and make sure they have jobs,” said Jennings.

Jennings started the organization years ago after her husband committed suicide. She said she was given a message from God to help those in need while standing under an overpass in downtown Dallas.

“So we do what we can to help these people…but most of all we tell them that God loves them and give them food and show them the love that God has and that’s how some of the homeless people got out of homelessness,” said Jennings.

The event is on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center at 650 Griffin St. in Dallas.
