Avoid Cooking Fires this Thanksgiving

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the nation’s leading day for cooking fires.

Mike Drivdahl with the Fort Worth Fire Department says they see an uptick in fires this time of year and reminds North Texans to be careful when cooking. “You do not want to walk away from a stove or barbeque or your propane turkey cookers…you want to stay really close so you have an opportunity to catch it before there’s a fire or an issue,” said Drivdahl.

In addition to the hazards posed by jammed stovetops and crowded kitchens, Drivdahl says turkey fryers can be extremely dangerous and can be deadly when not used in a well ventilated area. “We say all the time that safety doesn’t take a holiday so definitely use those fryers outside, even if it’s cold we don’t want you to do that in your garage or underneath a patio cover, you need to be doing that in a well ventilated area, leveled ground and away from your house,” he said.

He said you must follow this to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, it’s a colorless, odorless gas that can’t be detected. Also do not try to deep fry a frozen turkey.
