City of Dallas Confronting Financial Impact of October Tornado

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas City Council was briefed Wednesday on the financial impact of last month’s string of tornadoes that ripped through parts of the city.

More than 900 structures were damaged or destroyed in the storm.

“106 were destroyed, 287 had major damage, 356 minor, 156 were affected,” Dallas Emergency Management Coordinator Rocky Vaz told the Council.

FEMA continues to assess a dollar amount associated with the storm.

“They started that process on October 28,” said Vaz. “They were down here for a couple of days and looked at all the damages we had reported. That was the first step. They are now looking through all those numbers.”

According to Vaz, if uninsured damages reach $38.5 million, the city qualifies for federal assistance. Initial damage projections were close to $50-million, but included some insured properties.

The City of Dallas estimates is suffered $60 million in damages from the storm, including close to $30 million from affected traffic signals. The city plans to utilize its reserve fund and any granted Federal help as recovery efforts continue.
