[VIDEO] A Collin County Non-Profit is Building a Housing Development Out of Shipping Containers

McKinney, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – Habitat for Humanity of Collin County is building a townhouse village in McKinney made up entirely of shipping containers.

C-E-O Celeste Cox, tells WFAA-TV, the project will give lower income families a chance to own homes. She says Habitat branches across the country are paying attention to the development for which the McKinney organization already received hundreds of applications.

Thirty-five container homes that will collectively be called ‘Cottage Groves’ is taking shape on 2.7 acres of land near Bumpas street.

JD Lee of JDL Group is assisting with development.

Mr. Lee says, “Every person in American should be afforded the opportunity to have a piece of the American dream; owning a home is a part of that dream.”

Container homes are nothing new, but the size of the project and habitat’s involvement renders the project “unprecedented.”

As for eligibility requirements: Family income of 24-to-42-thousand dollars a year; hours of community service, and applicants must live or work in Collin County.
