Petition Circulating to Rename Dallas Street after Botham Jean

Botham Jean

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A petition to rename a Dallas street after Botham Jean has garnered tens of thousands of signatures.

Jean was murdered by former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger at the Southside Flats Apartments on Lamar Street last year after she said she mistook his apartment for her own. Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison earlier this month. Now, Dallas resident Chris Norman proposes that a portion of Lamar, including where DPD Headquarters sits, be renamed to Botham Jean way.

“We feel this is important as we push for police reform as a sign that bad policing will not be tolerated,” said Norman. “This is also significant due to Dallas Police Headquarters is located on Lamar Street, and coincidentally, the same street where he was murdered in his home by now-former police officer Amber Guyger.”

Norman said the street name change would serve as a reminder that “Police misconduct and brutality will not go unpunished” as well as a sign that the city of Dallas, along with the Dallas Police Department is pushing forward to fix these issues that plague the community.”

As of Friday afternoon, the petition had close to 50,000 signatures. Norman plans to present it to the Dallas City Council.
