North Texas Movie Theatres Taking Precautions with Opening of ‘Joker’ Movie

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Extra precautions are being taken at movie theatres across North Texas this weekend with the opening of the new ‘JOKER’ movie.

In the wake of the 2012 Aurora, Colorado mass shooting during a midnight showing of the ‘Dark Knight Rises,’ many theatres aren’t allowing customers to wear costumes or bring props.

“It’s a good decision because it’s safe,” said a Dallas movie-goer. “So people can see their faces and identify who someone is.”

Not all theatres are banning cosplay but are encouraging customers to be vigilant of their surrounding.

“There have been some guest inquiries surrounding JOKER screenings, and what we’re doing as a company to ensure staff and guest safety, which is at all times our primary concern,” said a spokesperson with the Alamo Drafthouse movie chain. “We engage with local law enforcement on an ongoing basis about security at our theaters, and while we’re unaware of any specific threat or concern, we will have additional security personnel present at each location for opening weekend for the comfort of our staff and guests. Additionally, cosplaying will be allowed, however, guests in costume are always subject to search at the discretion of theater staff at any time, and may be asked to leave for any reason.”

Theatres across DFW are boosting security through the weekend.
