PLANO (WBAP/KLIF)- The Plano Police Department is warning elderly citizens after investigating a series of thefts where a suspect is targeting nursing homes and retirement communities.

David Tilley with the Plano Police Department said the man identifies himself as a maintenance worker, pest control sprayer, or water department official and then steals while the victim is not looking.

“He’ll go into the apartment and ask to check their water and turn on several sinks on an d tells them to watch it while he steal jewelry and other items from their home,” he said.

Tilley said the suspect is good at tricking these individuals and warns people to never allow unscheduled workers inside their homes and always verify their identity before allowing anyone inside. “The senior citizens are a little bit more trusting…They grew up in a different time than us so they are more vulnerable to these situations where they are living in a retirement community and they don’t necessarily know when scheduled maintenance is taking place,” he said. The man is described as having darker skin; either Hispanic or Italian, with a goatee. He’s in his early 30’s, around 5’9″-5’11” and about 180-200 pounds.
