Denton Police Partners with Local Bars to Prevent Sexual Assaults

DENTON (WBAP/KLIF)- The Denton Police Department launches the “Ask for Angela” program aimed to prevent sexual assaults. The program provides a discreet method for people to ask for help if they feel unsafe or in danger. Someone can simply ask bar staff for Angela and staff is trained to pull the person aside and help them. Help could include an escort to their car, offer a safe ride home, call friend or family member or call for police response. “This is especially important to the department because Denton is home to three college campuses,” said Police Chief Frank Dixon.

Dixon said so far, 20 bars in the downtown area and Fry Streets are involved in the program and expects it to grow even further.

The initiative also received support of local sororities, The University of Texas Police Department and Texas Woman’s University Police Department. Flyers have been distributed to bars notifying people of the program.

Any establishments interested in the program are asked to to call the police department at 940-349-8558.
