Football Game Between Plano, El Paso High Schools Set to Go On in Frisco Tonight

PLANO  (WBAP/KLIF News) – An annual football game between Plano Senior High School and El Paso’s Eastwood High School that was canceled in the wake of a deadly mass shooting will play out in North Texas Thursday night.

22 people were killed in an El Paso Walmart August 3rd, just minutes away from where the game would have been held days later.

The game was canceled by Plano for safety reasons but reinstated a day later.

“Initially, maybe from a safety standpoint there wasn’t clarity as to whether it could be done in a way that everyone involved would feel safe and once that got resolved it opened the path for the game to happen and I am so exited we’re going to play the game,” said Plano Mayor Harry Larosilliere.

Many North Texans said the game should have gone on as planned as a way to show support for El Paso and help a community heal. The reinstatement of the game pleased Larosilliere.

“Sports sometimes gives us a venue to express ourselves in so many different ways. This game signifies the unity between us and El Paso,” he said.

The game is taking place at The Star in Frisco because of its strong security.

It will be broadcast by our media partner WFAA TV at 7 p.m.
