Texas House and Senate Form Committees to Help Find Ways to Prevent Gun Violence and Mass Shootings

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Texas House and Senate are forming committees that will consider ways to help prevent gun violence and mass shootings.

Calls for action have been growing since 22 people were killed in a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso last month and seven people were killed in a shooting rampage in Odessa and Midland this week.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dennis Bonnen announced the committees late Tuesday.

The participants will study how to improve public safety and legislative solutions to meet the committee’s goals.

In a statement, Governor Greg Abbott said he applauds both chambers for the move and that his words must be followed by meaningful action.

However, some citizens and lawmakers are demanding more.

House Democrats are calling on Governor Abbott to call a special legislative session to deal with the gun violence. It’s a move Abbott avoided after the El Paso mass shooting.

The Legislature does not reconvene until 2021.
