DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- There’s a large crowd of people at the MLK Jr. Community Center in South Dallas Friday for a back to school event.
Dallas ISD parents and students are able to get free backpacks loaded with school supplies, uniforms and even health screenings.
“I can estimate that we probably had over 2,000 people stop by… it’s growing more and more each year. Last year we had close to 2,000 this year it’s close to 3,000,” said MLK Center Board Member Elaine Sacks.
Reliant Energy donated the back packs. Sandee Treptow with Reliant Energy says the backpacks they’re handing out are catered to specific grade levels. “We are giving out thousands and thousands of backpack supplies to enable these kids to be ready for school…they light up when they get it..it’s great knowing that it’s one less thing they have to worry about,” Treptow said.
Keyerra Batiste is a mother of three, her kids will returning to school Monday. “This is very helpful because every year I spend around $100 each kid on school supplies without uniforms…it get’s very expensive when it all adds up. Today, we probably knocked out half the supply list in 15 minutes,” said Batiste.
Another event is scheduled at the West Dallas Community Center Saturday 8/17 from 10a to 1p.
