AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – The Chairman of the Texas House GOP Caucus resigned from the position Friday, amid controversy.
Earlier this summer allegations surfaced that State Representative Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock), along with Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen, planned to politically target other Republican leaders in the 2020 primaries. Conservative activist Michael Quinn Sullivan claims that Burrows and Bonnen promised him media credentials in exchange for his group politically targeting certain Republicans.
“[The resignation] is not quite an admission of guilt,” said SMU Political Science Professor, Dr. Cal Jillson. “But this is the first cowboy shot out of the saddle and the question is whether or not Speaker Bonnen will be the second.”
The Texas Department of Public Safety opened an investigation into the claim last week.
Bonnen issued a statement Friday, saying he respects Burrows’ decision.
