MINERAL WELLS, Texas (AP) – The Mineral Wells City Council voted to not move forward with an ordinance that would prevent providers from performing abortions.
The council voted 5-2 Monday night against the ordinance that was put forward by Mineral Wells Mayor Christopher Perricone.
Perricone said he wanted to make his town a “sanctuary city for the unborn” after the town of Waskom enacted a similar measure last month.
The Star-Telegram reports that earlier Tuesday, the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas sent a letter to Mineral Wells council members warning that its proposal was unconstitutional.
Council members said they were concerned about the possibility of expensive lawsuits against the city.
There are currently no abortion clinics in either Waskom or Mineral Wells, so the measures are largely symbolic.
