Fort Worth Reading Organization Calling on 1,000 Volunteers to Help Students

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – Read Fort Worth, an organization teamed with students in the Fort Worth ISD, is hoping to more than double its previous goal of partnering students with volunteers next school year.

Executive Director Anel Mercado says their goal is having 100 percent of third graders reading at grade level in six years.

“Our students need different levels of support and so pairing them with caring adults who will help them improve their reading skills is one of the strategies,” Mercado said.

They are hoping for 1,000 volunteers this coming year while the past years they have only asked for 300 to 400.

“We know that one in three students is not reading on grade level and we know that we have roughly around 26,000 to 27,000 students in that Kindergarten to third grade space,” Mercado said.
