District of Columbia Wants Feds to Pay Any Damages Caused by President Trump’s July 4th Event

WASHINGTON (AP) – The District of Columbia said it expects the federal government to pay for any damage to roads caused by military tanks and other heavy vehicles brought to city for President Donald Trump’s Fourth of July event.

The City’s Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kevin Donahue told The Associated Press that civil engineers will assess roads and bridges after the holiday to determine if there’s been damage.

Donahue said the city had little choice but to accept the plans despite objections to them by the City Council.

There are two Bradley fighting vehicles parked near the Lincoln Memorial and two 60-ton Army Abrams battle tanks were sent to Washington by rail to be positioned on or near the National Mall.

Trump’s planned addition to the usual Fourth of July festivities includes displays of military hardware, flyovers by military aircraft, a speech at the Lincoln Memorial and a longer-than-usual fireworks show.

Protesters have already started to arrive ahead in Washington D.C. ahead of the Independence Day events.

The National Wildlife Park Service signed off on a permit for the activist group Codepink to fly a Trump baby blimp in the city Thursday, though it will be out of the line of site of the Lincoln Memorial.
