Governor Abbott Declares July “Watch Your Car Month”

AUSTIN  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Law enforcement is reminding Texans to protect themselves from becoming a victim of a car burglary or theft.

According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, a car is burglarized every two minutes and stolen every eight minutes.

The Fort Worth Police Department said July is the highest month for reports involving auto crimes.

They’ve offered some tips to keep your car safe.

  • Always lock your car, especially at home.
  • Always control your keys.
  • Always remove valuables from your car.
  • Always protect your identity by removing important documents.
  • Always park in a well-lit area.
  • Always give parking attendants the ignition key only.

According to the Texas DMV, the top five most stolen cars statewide in 2017 were the full-size Ford Pickup, full-size Chevy Pickup, full-size Dodge Pickup, full-size GMC Pickup and Honda Accord.
