State Report Reveals Break Issues Caused JPS Elevator to Crush, Injure Nurse

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- A report from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows brake failure is the reason a JPS hospital elevator crushed and severely injured a nurse in January. According to the report, the accident happened because worn-out brakes didn’t set when the elevator arrived at the tenth floor and continued to move when the nurse entered. The investigation also found that worn brakes and frozen pins showed a lack of routine maintenance checks. “We sent out an advisory to building owners and elevator contractors state-wide reminding them the importance of elevator routine checks,” said Tila Mange with TDLR. Mange said elevator inspections are required once a year, but routine checks should be done frequently. Elevator #29 at JPS  will remain out of service until brakes are replaced and TDLR Chief Elevator Inspector says he will not put the elevator back into service until brakes are tested properly. JPS denied request for comment, saying the report speaks for itself.
