50 Plano Companies Recognized as “Green Businesses”

PLANO  (WBAP/KLIF News) – 50 Plano companies are now recognized as “green businesses.”

Chris Day with the City of Plano said that means the small to medium-sized businesses from offices to restaurants are taking consistent steps to make a positive impact on the environment which includes reducing waste, using water and energy efficiently, avoiding using styrofoam at restaurants and educating the public about green businesses.

“This idea about a green business being something that about a tree hugger is just not true. They impact us in a positive way and depending on what their focus is they’re lightening our load on infrastructure,” he said.

Residents will be able to tell whether the business is considered green because of the decal that will be displayed in front of the establishment.

Day said the beneficiaries of green businesses are two fold…the community and the businesses themselves.

“It’s a chance for those green businesses to really be an extension of their local chamber. They talk together. They network together and a lot of them buy things from each other that we don’t even know about,” he said.

The program is managed by the City’s Commercial Recycling Division.

To remain in good standing, the green businesses have to submit a checklist to show they’re continuing to follow the necessary guidelines.
