FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- Fort Worth ISD launches a Safe Routes to School program.
Steve Cooke Fort Worth’s Director of Transportation says they received $10 million in funding from The North Central Texas Council of Governments and the City to make routes safer from a quarter mile away from seven elementary schools.
“Make sure there’s a sidewalk on either side of the street, make sure there’s ramps on the curbs so they can cross easily, and make sure crosswalks are in place and appropriate signage to let drivers know there’s a school near by and they need to slow down or stop…whatever the case may be,” Cooke said
They’ve scheduled seven meetings at the schools to get community input. “It’s critical so we can get feedback from people who live in the area. We can do the engineering studies and figure out what’s important but if we don’t get the input and know the things they know, we’ll have an incomplete design,” Cooke said.
Meetings are scheduled for:
• Bonnie Brae Elementary, 6 p.m. March 27, Bonnie Brae Elementary, 3504 Kimbo Road.
• Mary Louise Phillips Elementary, 6 p.m. April 3, R.D. Evans Community Center, 3242 Lackland Road.
