NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Human trafficking is a growing problem world wide and North Texas is not immune.
The Texas Department of Transportation said that’s why they’re rolling out an initiative to help fight the disturbing trend.
TxDot’s Donna Huerta-Simmons said employees will be taught tactics that are similar to a neighborhood watch program.
“If they see anything suspicious…anything at all…we want them to call. So, we put cards in all of our vehicles for our employees to read the number and make that call,” she said.
Employees will be trained on the tell-tale signs to watch out for.
“We have some many employees out on the roads doing their jobs, they see people driving too and from, they see people changing a tire or they see people who might look suspicious,” she said.
Numerous agencies have started launching campaigns to educate the public about human trafficking and ways that they can combat it.
Huerta-Simmons said TxDOT is just doing its part.
“The governor’s office has challenged all of the state agencies to make an effort to be aware of it…look for the signs…know what to see. If you put all of the state agencies together, we have hundreds of thousands of people out there,” she said.
According to the Texas Attorney General’s Office, there are 79,000 victims of youth or minor sex trafficking in Texas at any given time.
