FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson visits Fort Worth to talk with Mayor Betsy Price about public private public partnerships to help end homelessness.
Carson spoke with Price about Fort Worth’s successful initiative that housed over 180 homeless veterans in 100 days. “the key that has really cut veteran homelessness from 2010 to now is getting them into housing but also those other supportive services that really elevate people,” Carson said.
Secretary Carson’s visit comes a day after Tarrant County’s Continuum of Care Program was awarded over 13 million dollars in HUD funding to develop supportive housing and services to the homeless community, an increase of over $1 million compared to last year. HUD Continuum of Care funds will support 39 projects operated by 12 nonprofit and governmental agencies in Tarrant County. “That will get more people in supportive housing with services to get back on their feet,” Price said. Dr. Carson said Fort Worth continues to be a model for public-private partnerships with its effective, innovative and collaborative initiatives. “It’s our neighbors who are homeless, our citizens, we know what’s going to work in this population,” Price said. “Dr. Carson has been really good at allowing flexibility and innovation with the HUD dollars that flow to us, for us to have that flexibility to deliver service that works in our community is one of the reasons we must be on the front line to fight these issues,” she said. During Mayor Price’s annual state of the city address, she announced Fort Worth’s private foundations pledge to match public investment dollar for dollar.
