DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- Starting March 17th you can fly on Southwest Airlines to Hawaii with Fares as low as $49 one-way from Oakland and San Jose in California, to Honolulu and Kahului in Hawaii.
These discounted fares are available for purchase through March 5th for the inaugural special.
Aviation Historian Jay Miller said this could cause competitors, like American Airlines, to lower their fares to Hawaii to compete with Southwest. “It pays off well for Southwest, financially I think they will have success in competing,” Miller said. “They do have a reputation to offer cheap seats compared to the bigger players,” he said.
Miller said this is a huge deal for Southwest since the Wright Amendment, that limited flights out of Dallas Love Field to protect Dallas Fort Worth Airport from competition. Since that was repealed 5 years ago, the inaugural flight to Hawaii is set for March 17th.
Miller said this could be the first step in offering international flights.
