Dallas ISD Approves an Expanded Sex Education Curriculum

Dallas, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – Soon, Dallas Independent School District will have a unified sex education curriculum.

This, after the board voted to adopt the sweeping policy last night.

Terry Greenberg with the North Texas Alliance to reduce unintended pregnancy says this is a big change for DISD.

“This is a huge change going forward, this is not something they’ve had before, Greenberg told WFAA-TV. She says that her organization is “encouraging all school districts to support medically accurate, sexuality education.”

Trustees adopted the expanded sex education plan 6-1 with board member Lew Blackburn voting against it. Trustee Joyce Foreman was not present at the vote.

Parents will be able to “opt out” of high school courses that will be more frank, and will teach abstinence plus birth control options.

Dallas has the highest teen birth rate that any other city in Texas.  The curriculum will include education on abstinence, communication skills, contraception and preventing sexually transmitted infections.

Several speakers voiced their views, both for and against the proposal.  DISD Student Joe Gallegos spoke in favor of “access to accurate information about safe-sex, pregnancy prevention, and sexually transmitted diseases.

“Every teenager talks about sex although they don’t really know the real facts and consequences,” Gallegos said. “We deserve to have the real facts about sex education.”
