Texas Teachers Could Get $5,000 Raise

AUSTIN  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Texas teachers could be getting a significant raise next year.

The Senate Finance Committee approved Senate Bill 3 on Monday, which would give all classroom teachers a $5,000 raise for the 2019-2020 school year.

The bill, which was sponsored by Representative Jane Nelson of North Texas, includes charter school teachers but does not include school support staff such as librarians or counselors.

According to the Texas State Teachers Association, the bill would help close a $7,300 gap in the average Texas teacher’s salary when compared to the national average.

The TSTA also said the move will help the 39 percent of Texas teachers who are forced to take on a second job just to make ends meet.

Approving the bill would cost just under $2 billion dollars a year.

SB 3 must first be debated by the full Senate before a full vote.
