As Hollywood Celebrates Oscars, Filmmakers Lament Decline In Texas Shoots

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – As Hollywood celebrates the 91st annual Academy Awards, local production companies are trying to get more movies shot in Texas. The number of location shoots in Dallas and Texas has been steadily declining in recent years, due to a drop in state tax incentives for production companies. Amanda Presmyk, Vice President of Production for Dallas-based Cinestate, says big budget productions can’t afford to come to Texas due to the lack of incentives. Instead, states like Georgia are seeing a boom in film projects shot on location by offering hundreds of millions of dollars in tax incentives. Blockbuster movies like “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War” were partially shot on Georgia soil. Both were nominated for Academy Awards. Governor Greg Abbott has proposed giving more incentives to filmmakers to reinvigorate the struggling Texas movie landscape.
