Dallas City Council Lifts College Requirements for Incoming Police Officers

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas Police Department is relaxing its requirements for incoming Police Officers.

Amid increasing response times, the Dallas City Council voted Wednesday to no longer require 45 college credit hours for already licensed Police Officers. Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata said lowering standards isn’t the best solution.

“It does the City of Dallas no good to have 50 people in an academy class that aren’t 50 of the best people in that academy class,” said Mata.

Mata said the city should’ve given a recent pay raise to $60,000 a year for starting Officers more time to have an effect before relaxing college requirements.

The change in policy comes while the Dallas Police Department works to improve its recruiting and boost its number of Officers.
