Bedford Approves Juvenile Curfew for Another 3 Years

BEDFORD (WBAP/KIF)- The city of Bedford approved to keep the same juvenile curfew ordinance for another 3 years.

Lieutenant Mike Hager with Bedford PD said this ordinance has a direct correlation to keep crime rates down, and city leaders agree. “It keeps juveniles off the streets during peak times when things happen such as theft, teenage drinking criminal mischief,” Hager said. He said this curfew gives parents the opportunity to be involved in what their kids are doing and allows the Police Department the ability to deal with these situations.

Police Officials met with City Leaders to discuss the curfew and what it’s done over the last three years. In a presentation made by the Chief of Police it shows zero citations given during day time curfew last year and only 7 citations given at night with only 8 offenses recorded during daytime curfews from 2017-2018.

Bedford Mayor Jim Griffin said after review, they decided to keep the same laws in place, because it has worked to keep teens safe as well as reduce crime in the city.

“We addressed all concerns, we included homeschooled and private school students there’s a lot of provisions in the ordinance to assist police,” Griffin said.

The curfew is Sunday through Thursday night from 11pm to 6am, Friday and Saturday from Midnight to 6am and during the school day it’s 9am to 2:30pm with some exceptions.
