House Republicans Begin Congressional Session with Mixed Emotions

(WBAP/KLIF) – House Republicans begin a new congressional session in Washington with Democrats in control.
Congressman Michael Burgess told the WBAP Morning News Thursday that he hopes Republicans can limit how much Democrats set the tone for the new session.

“I hope we can prevent the worst excesses of this new incoming democrat house from harming the country,” said Burgess. “That’s my number one goal.”

House Democrats say they have a plan to reopen the government, but it’s not clear whether Republicans will get be on board. Burgess said he and other Republicans have mixed emotions as the session begins.

“It’s always an honor to be sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Burgess. “The other part of that is, right after your sworn in you have a speaker who I’ve had before and the country didn’t do that well.”

Immigration and the status of the U.S.-Mexico border will be a high profile topic that is expected to cause Republicans and Democrats to continue to butt heads. President Donald Trump is not backing down on his demands for funding for a border wall. Burgess said it’s clear changes need to be made at the border and hopes both sides can come to an agreement.

“It’s clearly not adequate what’s going on down there,” said Burgess. “Customs and Border Patrol will tell you the fences as they exist are not satisfactory. How can anyone want that?”

The Congressman emphasized hope that the two sides will work together respectfully once Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi is sworn in, but said he’s hesitant to believe she will show any compromise.
