FRISCO, TX (WBAP/KLIF News) — Frisco’s business and population boom has city leaders looking to expand tourism as well.
In October the Frisco City Council approved a resolution to pursue the creation of a tourism public improvement district, or TPID. The measure will need approval by the Texas Legislature in the upcoming session beginning in January. If finalized the city would collect a two percent fee from hotel room rates and use the money for marketing and incentives.
Frisco has 17 hotels with six more under construction and five in planning stages.
Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney told Community Impact, “Tourism is seen as a big part of our local economy, and we feel like now with the amenities we have here, we can compete with any big city.”
Even if the legislature approves the city will have several other steps to take, including a vote by citizens.
There are only five cities in Texas that have already received designation as TPIDs. Dallas was the first in 2011.
