United Way of Denton County Pilot Program Provides Free Transportation for Veterans in Crisis

DENTON  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Veterans in Denton County now have access to free transportation so they can get to services that are desperately needed in times of crisis.

The Veteran Community Navigator Program will help serve the more than 41,000 veterans who live in the area.

United Way of Denton County CEO Gary Henderson said research showed that when it came to veterans gaining access to health, financial, legal and employment services, there was always one major barrier in the way.

“We saw time and time again that transportation for veterans was always one of the barriers limiting us from moving them from crisis to self sufficiency,” he said.

The program is the product of a joint effort between the United Way of Denton County and the Denton County Transit Authority.

“We could schedule appointments with veterans in crisis and provide them with gift cards not only to DCTA, rail and bus route transportation but to Yellow Cab and Lyft transportation as well,” he said.

The cards will be given to pre-selected clients based on need as determined by the UWDC and Veteran Community Navigators.

Henderson said the services have a tremendous impact on the lives of veterans and their families…especially for those who are struggling.

“When you provide them with a gift card  that allows them to independently use that service, access it and use that service and begin to be on the road to recovery, you’ve empowered someone whose served our country so well,” he said.
