DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger has been indicted on a murder charge in the September shooting death of Botham Jean.
Guyger told investigators she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own at the Southside Flats and shot him thinking he was an intruder. She was indicted on a manslaughter charge. by the Texas Rangers.
The Grand Jury heard testimony three days this week and voted to indict Guyger on a murder charge Friday.
“I want to thank the Grand Jury for the diligence they have given to this case,” said Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson. “The concentration; the the work.”
Johnson said in days after the shooting that her office would thoroughly investigate the case and present the facts of the case. She said Friday prosecutors explained the law to the jurors.
“A murder case is intentionally and knowingly committing that act,” said Johnson. Manslaughter is recklessly doing something.”
Civil attorney’s for the Jean family said the indictment is a step forward toward justice for any unarmed black man killed by Police.
“The Grand Jury sent a very strong signal that this is not going to be tolerated,” said attorney Daryl Washington. “At least this is the kind of case that a jury should hear.”
Jean’s mother Allison Jean said she was satisfied by the Grand Jury’s decision and is urging for a conviction.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings released a statement following the indictment.
“Botham Jean was an incredible young man who was tragically taken from us too soon. Our city will never forget him. Today’s decision is another step on the long path toward justice for Botham. We appreciate the work of the Texas Rangers and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. Please continue to pray for the Jean family.”
