NORTH TEXAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – A man who spent almost a month living on a barge on Lake Ray Hubbard has reached his fundraising goal to improve drinking water in Liberia.

Dr. Todd Phillips, Founder and President of The Last Well, said he chose to spend time on the lake to raise awareness and $2.29 million for his cause.

“We can certainly see the finish line but we understood that we had to create a tremendous amount of awareness and really funds to come in and finish this massive project,” he said.

According to the Last Well, 100 people die every day due to a water-born illness and half of them are children.

The organization’s mission statement said it’s to “provide access to safe drinking water for the entire nation of Liberia, border to border, and offer the gospel to every community we serve.”

“This has been a 10-year journey for me personally and for us as an organization. I was there when the project began and now we can see the finish line some 26-months out,” he said.

He hopes to have the project completed by the end of 2020.
