DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The mother of Botham Jean, the man who was killed in his own home by a Dallas police officer last month, said she’s satisfied with Dallas County District Attorney’s investigation so far.
Allison and Bertrum Jean, Botham’s parents, flew in from St. Lucia and met with Faith Johnson Tuesday.
Mrs. Jean told reporters that what hurts most is how the case put a spotlight on inequalities in the system.
“He was not running while black, he was not walking while black, he was not driving while black but he was in his apartment by himself watching television and he died while black,” she said.
Amber Guyger, who was fired from the Dallas Police Department last month, told investigators that on September 6th, she went into Jean’s unit by mistake thinking it was hers. She said she allegedly shot him because she thought he was an intruder.
Jean family attorneys said Guyger’s account of the shooting differs from neighbor accounts. She has been charged with manslaughter.
Following the killing, which sparked national outcry, Johnson pledged to seek justice in the case.
Mrs. Jean said the outcome of the meeting was comforting.
“The case is progressing and we’re hoping we can get justice for Botham,” she said.
Since Botham’s death, there have been numerous protests and activists are calling for Guyger to be charged with murder.
