DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The fate of a former Mesquite Police Officer is in the hands of a Dallas County jury.
Deliberations in the trial for Derick Wiley began Wednesday. Wiley is charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon on the 2017 shooting of Lyndo Jones, who survived. Wiley testified that he thought Jones was breaking into a truck. But the truck belonged to Jones.
Body camera footage was shown to the jury. Wiley claims he was in fear for his life. The prosecution argues that Wiley had no reason to shoot Jones.
“The fact that the defendant was a Police Officer on that day does not excuse him,” the state told the jury during closing arguments.
“He (Jones) turned in to an aggressive stance to confront Officer Wiley,” the defense said.
Wiley was fired as a result of the shooting.
