NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) – Bill Cosby spent his first night behind bars at a new state prison in suburban Philadelphia.
Cosby spent a few hours at the county jail Tuesday before heading to SCI Phoenix, a 3,830-bed lockup that opened two months ago, and is located in the Philadelphia suburbs 20-minutes from his gated estate.
He’s being housed in a single cell near the infirmary. Corrections Secretary John Wetzel says the prison’s long-term goal is to place Cosby in the general population. Under prison policy, he’ll be allowed phone calls and visits and will get a chance to exercise.
Wetzel says the prison is “taking all of the necessary precautions” to ensure the celebrity’s safety.
The prison system assigned Cosby inmate number NN7687.
