DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- It’s a busy weekend for Galleria Dallas, shoppers are traveling just to save big on back to school items.
Families with kids in elementary through high school are expected to spend around $680 and save around $60. According to a study from the National Retail Federation Texas shoppers will save an estimated $90.3 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday.
Before heading out to the mall here are some tips to consider:
Generally, most clothing, backpacks and school supplies under $100 each are tax free. But there are a few items that are still taxed:
· Most of your back to school denim will be tax free – but some designer denim will be above $100 and therefore taxed. Often retailers will discount items to under $100 just for this weekend.
· Running shoes or athletic shoes are tax free – but football or soccer cleats are taxed (sport specific items)
· Scarves and ties are tax free as a clothing item – but necklaces and barrettes are taxable (accessories)
· Backpacks are tax free – but purses are taxed.
· Hats are tax free – but headbands are taxable
· Leather goods depend upon where you use them. Belts are tax free – but wallets are taxable.
