LISTEN: Northwest ISD Taking Steps to Keep Students Safe

(WBAP/KLIF) – The Superintendent of Northwest ISD is encouraging communication between administrators and parents in the wake of recent school shootings.

Ryder Warren told the WBAP/KLIF School Safety Podcast that the district is taking steps to keep students safe but said precautions can also be taken at home.

“Parents have to know what are in kids backpacks when they comes to school,” said Warren. “They’ve got to know what kind of language kids are using on social media. What kind of statements are they making.”

Northwest ISD is making improvements to locks on classroom doors and school entrances this summer and expects to be finished with the project by the end of 2018. The district is spending an estimated $15 million on school safety measures. Warren said mental health resources and threat assessment also play a critical role in keeping schools safe.
