An SMU Geologist explains how the Irving Parking Garage Collapse could have been Prevented

IRVING (WBAP/KLIF) – The movement of soil was said to be the cause of the Irving parking garage collapse. SMU Geology professor Steven Bergman said the soil swells up during the wet seasons and when it dries it forms cracks, making the ground unstable. Bergman said the simple solution is limestone. “If you mix limestone before building, it will keep the soil from shifting,” Bergman said. He said a lot of builders cut corners, and skip this step but it’s vital for a stable foundation. Soil shifting is very common in Texas but there are ways to prevent it and save buildings from potentially collapsing.
