DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The non-profit has been dubbed “Whiskers for Wounded Warriors.” The group, consisting of 14 bearded men has been helping Veterans for years. They’ve teamed up with local police departments to deliver backpacks to homeless veterans. Sachse Police Department, Murphy Police Department, Wylie Police Department, Rowlett Police Department and Garland Police Department loaded up their squad cars with stuffed backpacks and distributed them to the homeless throughout the metroplex.
Mike Wilburn, president of the organization said the packs are seasonal. In the summertime, they fill them with clothes, water and non-persihable food items. In the winter, they fill them with warm clothing, food and blankets. “It cost somebody for my freedom, even though I didn’t serve, I felt this was a way to return the favor,” Wilburn said.
The group has already donated several hundreds of backpacks. Wilburn said he wants to continue helping those who fought for his freedom.
“You don’t need a beard to donate, all you need is a heart for giving back,” he said.
