Collin County Could Face Shortage of Judges as Population Grows

COLLIN COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News) – District judges in Collin County could be facing what is called a “judicial emergency” because of the area’s booming population.

At a Commissioner’s Court meeting, a district judge presented data showing that judges could be facing a crisis by 2020.

“By the time the 2019 legislature rolls around we will be again where we were in 2015. We will be over 2300 filings per court,” said District Judge Emily Miskel.

With their current case load, judges can spend about 53 minutes per case without getting overwhelmed. However, that time limit could shrink over the next few years.

The county has added three judges since 2008.

To add more district courts, the county will have to get approval from the legislature in January.
