Dallas Outreach Center Helping Keep the Homeless Safe from Scorching Heat

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A Dallas outreach center is helping the homeless stay cool during extreme heat in North Texas.

‘OurCalling’ is usually closed on Sundays but was open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. amid triple digit temperatures Sunday. The center has extended its hours on weekdays, staying open until 4 p.m. to keep people inside during the hottest hours of the day.

“We’ve definitely seen an increase in the number of people coming here in the heat of the day,” said OurCalling, Executive Director, Wayne Walker. “There have also been a lot more people suffering from heat exhaustion in recent weeks.”

The center has set up ice-water stations outside the building both before and after their normal hours. 

“It can be deadly out there,” said one Dallas homeless man volunteering at the center. “If you’re not drinking water then you’re in trouble.”Additionally, the center

The OC staff and volunteers are  filling up ice chests and bringing them out for the homeless guests. Also, volunteers and staff are filling up their guests’ backpacks, grocery bags, personal sized ice chests, Tupperware and any other thing imaginable to carry ice.
