AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Austin will be the location of a new Army command headquarters.
U.S. officials said Friday that the new site will focus on how to modernize the service and prepare for future wars. Fifteen cities were considered. The five finalists were Boston, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Raleigh, and Austin.
“The Army chose Austin because it not only possessed the talent, the entrepreneurial spirit, and access to key partners we are seeking, but also because it offers the quality of life our people desire and the cost of living our people can afford,” said Army Secretary, Dr. Mark Esper.
The command will have a staff of about 500, led by a four star general.
“The legacy of America’s freedom depends in part on the ability of our Armed Forces to remain at the forefront of technological advancement, expand our military’s power to assess threats, and modernize our defense,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott. “The State of Texas is proud to partner with the U.S. Army in establishing the Futures Command to harness the cutting-edge technologies needed to build an innovative, research-based foundation for our national defense.”
The Governor said he is proud of the Army’s presence in the Lone Star State.
