AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – Almost 60 cases of Cyclospora have been reported to Texas Department of State Health Services since May.
The department’s Lara Anton said they are trying determine the source of the outbreak, but it is usually fresh produce and water.
“We recommend thoroughly washing fresh produce. That may not entirely eliminate the risk because cyclospora can be difficult to wash off,” she said.
When an outbreak occurs, it is not uncommon for it to spread rapidly and over a wide area. Anton said finding the source of the outbreak can be difficult.
“It does take a about a week from the incubation period from when someone becomes infected and when they start experiencing symptoms. It does make it a little bit difficult to try and find that common source,” she said.
Symptoms include severe diarhhea, loss of appetite and fatigue.
